The Marine Bio-Technologies Center of Innovation (MBCOI) was established in 2012 through an inception grant from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC) to facilitate the translation of innovative marine-related discoveries into products and services to benefit North Carolina’s economy. MBCOI has established a headquarters and two regional offices to better serve North Carolina’s marine biotech community:
- Wilmington, NC (Headquarters): located in the Center for Marine Science building on the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) CREST campus
- Morehead City, NC (Regional Office): located in North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST)
- Research Triangle Park (RTP), NC (Regional Office): located in First Flight Venture Center (FFVC)
The corporation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, scientific and literary purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Chapter 55A of the General Statutes of North Carolina, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Sections 501(c)(3) and 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.
